Don’t Be a Good Lawyer, Be a Great Lawyer!

Being an attorney is only rewarding if you’re getting a lot of clients throughout the year. Whatever industry you work in, you need to ensure you’re offering the best services to your customers. The better your customer service, the better your reputation will be. And will you have a great reputation, you’re bound to have phone calls coming in from hot new leads. As with any business, how you deal with your customers is essential for building a good company name. Your image is everything, especially in the digital age. The last thing you need is for a disgruntled customer to go on social media and start venting their frustrations with your firm.

Keeping your customers satisfied, even if you lose their case, is key for maintaining their respect and gratitude. If you’re just starting out in the legal field or have been operating a firm for a few years, you can still use these tips to help improve your relationship with clients.

Maintain Open Communication

Cases are stressful, especially for your clients, so don’t leave them in limbo about the progress of their case. Make sure you’re keeping open communication with each of your clients in regards to the status and possible outcomes along the way. You also need to be available to your clients at reasonable times and hours. Don’t just take the call, make sure to actually listen to their concerns and questions and try to offer the best advice possible. Public speaking skills are also a must, since you will be arguing countless cases in front of a judge. You need to be able to convey your message and get points across efficiently.

Practice Good Judgment

You can’t be a great lawyer if you’re not capable of drawing reasonable and logical conclusions about different scenarios and cases. This will be key for anticipating possible outcomes and help you to make better decisions about your various cases. It will also help you to determine which cases have a fighting chance, then you can opt whether or not to represent that client. Your reputation relies on you winning cases, so it’s okay to be choosy about the cases you pick up.

Learn Analytical Skills

This will help improve your judgment skills, since you will need to analyze details to make a proper analysis. There’s a lot of information you will have to consume in short periods of time, so you’ll need to be able to sift through everything fairly quickly. There are sometimes multiple possible conclusions, so be prepared to juggle these when trying to resolve situations.

Learn People Skills

If you’re used to hitting the books and doing research all the time, it’s easy to forget that your job is just as much about people as it is about studying. Make sure you are good with speaking with others, including clients, other lawyers and judicial employees. It’s essential to be personable, persuasive and capable of reading others.
